There was live art inside and out. Everything from graffiti to charcoal portraits to nail art (yes, like manicures) and a little dancin' on the side. Shout out to Ashara of Cafe Nuba, DJ Skip Rip and Dunn the Signtologist.

In Our Opinion-Denvers Dopest DJs

Copy and paste this URL in your browser to view the print article.  http://www.ColoradoMusicBuzz.com/Index.asp?LinkTo=G583 (For some reason I can't create a link. Apologies).  For those who don't feel like reading the real article...Our list looks like this: Cysko Rokwel, DJ Awhat!, DJ Lazy Eyez, DJ SD, DJ LowKey, and DJ Psycho.

We all know that DJs are the backbone of our beloved Hip-Hop culture. Colorado has a choice crop of turntablists that is ever-growing. Our list is our favorites so far, as we haven’t had the opportunity to hear all the talent that this state has to offer (yet). We opted to get some quotes from other people, just to spice it up a bit. Please let us know about DJs that we didn’t mention that we need to check out!

Brik-A-Brak~DJBrikABrak.com

Brik-A-Brak spins as if his aim is to smash everything on the planet.  He glides from Luther Vandross to ODB, like on some Yamaguchi shit. Smooth. It's pretty awesome to watch.-Ru Johnson

DeeJay Tense~Myspace.com/DeejayTense

Tense, of ManeLine notoriety, has inspired many of the best DJs and MCs in Colorado.  His comfort on the decks makes his challenging style appear simple.-Nicole Cormier

DJ Amen~DJAmen.net

Amen helped lead in a new era of DJs for the RadioBum squad including the frontrunners of LowKey and Sounds Supreme. All 3 made changes to what major clubs in Denver were being allowed to spin. -7thDay

DJ Bedz~Myspace.com/DJBedz

Bedz holds it down on the 1s and 2s, throw in the White Shadow mixtape and you definitely get the party started. –Joe Blizzy

DJ Beretta~Myspace.com/FemmeFataleArtCollective

This woman knows her music and it is a treat to see her live sets. Her skills are refined, and last year she used them to stand in for DJ Awhat! at the Sundance Film Festival. After throwing and DJing Femme Fetale 4, she’s been scarce around town, but I truly hope we will be blessed enough to see her name on bills more often in the future. -Nicole Cormier

DJ Chonz~DJChonz.com

DJ Chonz spins a lot of music: Latin, house, funk soul, and underground hip hop. He just spun a funk and soul night in Vegas, then went back another weekend and spun a Latin set, he’s very well rounded, people don’t really get to see that side of him. -Xencs L. Wing

DJ Vajra~DJVajra.com

For every yin there is a yang, and Vajra is that to Cysko Rokwel. Both are highly respected DJs in the world wide circuit who are deserving of so much more praise than what the box state gives them. -7thDay

Sounds Supreme~ DJSoundsSupreme.com

DJ Sounds Supreme has probably made at least 80% of Denver crowd dance at some point, if not multiple points or even multiple times throughout a weekend. Have a weak dance floor?  Send Sounds behind the decks and watch what happens. A desolate, sad party transforms into exactly what it should be – vibrant and full of motion - at the hands of DJ Sounds Supreme. -Miss Rachel of PopularLemonade.com

Can You Think On Your Feet?

With $1000 at stake, Colorado MCs are clamoring for a spot in the “Put Yo Money Where Ya Mouth Is” Battle at the Walnut Room, presented by Saul Good Music. This event is not for the novice MC, this is where the big dogs will battle it out to see who comes up on top.

Here’s how it'll go down:

Wednesday February 17th-Preliminaries

Come off-the-top with your best freestyles to compete against other Colorado MCs for a spot in the finals. It’s $10 to enter, and your fate will be decided by a team of prestigious local judges. Also, for the audience’s entertainment, there will be live performances by: SP Double, Fresh Breath Committee, ManeRok, and DJ Unison will be providing the beats.

Saturday February 20th-Finals
The top 16 selected at the prelims will compete for $1000, and will be judged by freestyle legend, Supernatural. The decks will be manned by DJ Unison and DJ Lazy Eyez.

So, it’s time to step up, polish your vocal chords and give it your best because it’s not only your reputation, but a cool G on the line.

Turner Jackson and his Mixtape

There is something about this dude.  I've only heard him perform once, but I can honestly say I was quite intrigued with his style and his willingness to grow. He's trying to jump onto the scene, and seems ready to work hard to make his mark.  This Wednesday at the Rex Lounge (2936 Fox St. Denver) he will be dropping his mixtape The Ninja and the Metatron.

Should be an entertaining event.  Hope to see a lot of heads there. Learn more about Turner Jackson on Boxstatemusic.com or Turner's myspace page.
