Interview with Babah Fly

Babah Fly

“You wanna know about Babah Fly? I’ll tell you about Babah Fly. He’s a good kid.”

Fly Jedi, now better known as Babah for his paternal sense, came up as a skateboarding, break dancing Arkansas kid that felt a little different.

“When you turn 18 you’re an adult there so people started wearing Dockers,” he said. “I was just wearing normal skateboarder stuff.”

It wasn’t until he heard Afrika Bambaataa’s Planet Rock that he felt like he found his niche.

“I literally remember looking at the speaker and saying, ‘that’s the music.’ I had finally found it.”

When I sat down with Matt, (as he introduced himself) at the Gypsy House Café on Friday before a music/StarWars event he was putting on, he seemed completely comfortable and confident in what he has found to be his.

The first thing I noticed about him was that there is a bass tone in his speaking voice that I hadn’t heard on his CD or live. It made hearing him talk sound completely different. But unlike too many rappers who don’t live what they spit, as we talked about life, family and music it was evident that Matt off stage and Babah on stage are one in the same. As for the difference in sound, he attributes it to his background in Jazz.

“My style came from trying to make Jazz tones,” he explained. “But I stay feeling the beats.”

The beats are what keep him both behind the boards and the mic as a producer/emcee for himself and others. When he’s not formulating drums and electronic samples for himself as seen on his new CD, “Electro Sufi,” he is lending his talents to the Denver Avengerz and other acts in need of something new and original.

His originality and unique take on his purpose as a musician has kept him in the local scene for almost half of his life (he’s35).

“It’s a trip to me that I am still relevant in the scene when I haven’t really dropped anything in so long. It baffles me.”

Despite not putting out any major solo projects outside of mixtapes, his popularity has been based on longevity and sharing the spotlight with other musicians. A status he attributes to what he calls the ultimate strategy of being the “rapper’s rapper.”

“Most rappers are self-serving and are about what they can attain,” he said. “It’s a delusion I have that this music is going to change the world. The vibes I give you will inspire change. I want to get you inspired by your life and the culture of Hip Hop. There are so many strategies to become inspired and there’s a lot that can bring you down, but we always have music and dance to soothe us.”

Maintaining a positive outlook and outlet is what motivates this father of three to keep bringing his brand of Hip Hop to Colorado, something he says not everybody can appreciate.

“Not everybody likes my rhymes. The guy in the audience that beats his woman isn’t going to feel me, but he’s still say my beats are hard,” he said. “The most important thing in life is how I raise my children, so that’s going to reflect in everything I do. The music, in a sense, is like my lover. I would never treat a woman like that so my music says that- ‘be good to yourself and you’ll be good to other people.’”
Whether or not he is making or losing fans with “Electro Sufi” remains to be seen, though the traffic and plays of his new singles on Myspace portray a good buzz.

“Life is going to be heavy. If you have some way to levitate it it’s going to be easier. We can do that with music and thought. There’s a spiritual guidance of Hip Hop in this album-take the modern day hardship and give it that levitation, a levitation through spirit.”

He may always be a little different, but in the world of Hip Hop nothing is better.

Check him out!

Weekend Planning-Friday The 13th

This Friday just happens to be Friday The 13th.  It also just so happens that everybody and their moms are throwing a show.  It is pretty counterproductive for all these shows to occur on one night, and will surely make it hard for any of these artists to pull a huge crowd.  Nonetheless, there will be some amazing talent rocking at various venues around town, which event will you be checking out on Jason Voorhees' favorite day?

SP Double's Focus On SP Album Release Party

The venue has changed due to some roof problems at Pure, so now this party will be going down at The Climax Lounge (2217 Welton St).  It's only 8 bucks, and you'll get to see FOE, Spoke In Wordz, Foodchain, DJ Unison, Whygee and of course SP Double.  Also Free T-Shirts and Body Painting (which you know means nudity.)  Doors at 9.

Why This One: Good music, free shit and boobs...what more do you need?

Air Dubai with The Pirate Signal at the Marquis

Have you seen Air Dubai live yet? If you haven't, this is the show you need to go to! DAMN, they're impressive! Probably explains how they got themselves a Friday night headlining gig, with The Pirate Signal.  The Marquis is known for great sound and cheap beer, this event surely will be one for the books.  Doors at 7:30.

Why This One: Seriously, Air Dubai will blow your mind, and did I mention that PBR is cheap!

Westword's Best Of The West-Round 2 at Herman's Hideaway

This is a pretty hefty competition, people.  I hear there are 20K in prizes.  Nothing for any Colorado musician to turn their noses up at.  Round 2 of this comp. is Kruza Kid & The Contraband, Fresh Breath Committee, Swankstars (which if you don't know, is Ichiban's band) and Guerrilla Jazz.  Not only does attendance help these cats out, but you can also go here and vote for your favorite.  Doors at 8.

Why This One: Supporting Colorado talent (Only excuse you should need!)

Crown City Rockers and more at the Larimer Lounge

Not only the Crown City Rockers but LuckyIAm, ManeRok & DeeJay Tense, 3 The Hardway and DJ AWhat!  Larimer Lounge has that seedy indy rock feel that can be charming, and it seems to also translate over to Hip Hop without any miscommunication.  This bar is known to practically give away their beer, and generally gets pretty packed out.  Doors at 9.

Why This One: Cheap beer, great lineup, and did I mention...Cheap Beer!

I know, I know, too many shows...but we can all do our part.  Pick your favorite one or two and get your asses out and about!  Any of these choices will be that good time Friday night that everyone is looking for!

Weekend Planning

This Friday and Saturday night MC/DJ/Producer, J-Live of Triple Threat Productions out of New York will be blessing our state with back to back shows. Also sharing the bill will be some of Colorado’s heavy hitters.

Friday 11/6-Black Sheep (Colorado Springs)

Saturday 11/7-The Marquis (Denver)

Both shows are amped up to be a hell of a time with quality music, but Saturday night I hear there is something extra special going on…

An after party of epic proportions: A celebration of Myx Music Label Recording Artist Kam Moye (aka Supastition) and his newest release Splitting Image.

The North Carolina native who is on tour with J-Live boasts a list of collaborators throughout his projects including M Phazes, Illmind, Phonte (Little Brother), Royce Da 5'9" and many more. Kam Moye will be giving a special encore performance along with special performances by Colorado phenoms:

~Es Nine
~Paradox
~FOE
~Ichiban
~Spoke In Wordz
~DJ Manos

From what I’ve been told, this is an Invitation Only event, 21 and up (with ID), AND will have an open bar!

So, Denver, and the Springs alike…Check out either the Black Sheep or the Marquis and you not only will enjoy some great underground Hip Hop, but you may find yourself with a coveted invitation to the after party, like this one:

Fresh Breath Committee CD Release Party Review

Fresh Breath Committee CD Release Party
w/Masta Ace
The ReMinders
3 The Hardway
The Pirate Signal
Fox Theater
10/8/09

by 7th Day

So Nas' album Hip-Hop is Dead made a shocking statement to the world that had seen the peak of what Hip-Hop would become. Apparently, local upstarts the Fresh Breath Committee took notice and attempted to capitalize with their first crew venture-CPR.

As one might imagine, the F.B.C. (which consist of On Point aka Flawless & Fo Chief, Catch Lungs, Purpose, Kontrast, Hi-Res, DJ Skip Ripkin and singer Crystal) titles their album CPR as to say they are “breathing life back into Hip-Hop”-this theme is consistent throughout the album as well as in their liner notes and was repeatedly stated at their October release party-which is the real subject of discussion. The night consisted of a Colorado All Star line up including The Pirate Signal, 3 the Hardway and The ReMinders, as well as Hip-Hop legend Masta Ace. Let’s start from the beginning.

Up first was Denver’s most raucous act, The Pirate Signal. For those unfamiliar with T.P.S., front man Yonnas Abraham is always lauded with praise for, well; how crazy he is on stage. His performance would be best described as James Brown meets G.G.Allin (minus the poo, but definitely spitting.) Backed by what to this writer is the best Hype man/DJ in the state-DJ AWHAT!! The group exhibited the professionalism we have come to expect from Colorado’s first Hip-Hop act to have been on the Warped Tour and three time Westword Music Award winners, even when technical difficulties arose. Those who had never seen the act live were clueless as to what happened with the turntables, because of Yonnas’ and DJ AWHAT!!’s ability to keep things moving. Though they didn’t let the small snafu affect their set I always find myself hoping that they would transition with a little more fluidity, opposed to the stop and go rhythm they maintain. Regardless, the duo blew the doors off of the night, and set THE standard for the acts that followed.

Next were boom bap generals 3 the Hardway. The group-which consists of MC A.V.I.U.S., Prod/Hype man Es Nine and internationally praised DJ Cysko Rokwel, took the stage in their traditional fashion-commanding attention. From the first knock of the first beat, one can see why Es Nine was chosen as the 2009 Westword Best Producer and why the group’s album ‘Set In Stone’ was chosen for best album. A.V.I.U.S.’ grizzly voice floats effortlessly over Es Nine’s bangers backed with Rokwel’s dizzying cuts, scratches, and transformers. Though A.V.I.U.S.’ voice and Es Nine’s beats get your attention, any attendee of their shows becomes captivated by the control Rokwel exhibits over the turntables. It’s like watching Bruce Lee’s hands in the ‘Chinese Connection’-a blur that can destroy and build all at once. So much so, that at times it seems as though A.V.I.U.S. and Es Nine themselves become as captivated as the audience. Nevertheless, the set was solid, in fact, solid as a stone and had the people wanting more.

The ReMinders aka Aja Black, Big Samir and DJ Illadope (who was not in attendance) then took stage. The ReMinders have quickly become a recognizable name not only in our great state, but around the world as they recently returned from a European tour. The duo (who happen to be a happily married couple), Aja Black and Samir have actually been doing music for quite some time (i.e. Accumen) and both those aspects shine in their performance. They are most definitely a couple that works well on stage-with Aja’s soaring vocals and Samir’s straight forward flow, but don’t get it twisted, Aja does not only sing, the woman also bust with the ferocity of any of her male counterparts. The pair kept the party going at a continuous pace throughout their set-which to a degree was also a noticeable weakness. Some of their songs blended into each other, as though they were the same song. It took a minute (and a new hook) for one to notice they had moved on. I would expect more movements in their set as the talent is there to keep an audience captivated, regardless of the mood or tempo from song to song.

Finally-the stars of the night took the stage-Fresh Breath Committee. Well, it would have been assumed that they were the stars of the night considering this was their release party, except that they gave up headlining rights to Masta Ace. Not that he didn’t deserve the slot of course, but this was a night to celebrate Colorado Hip-Hop and a new addition to that library.

The group started their hour + set off with a bang, the crowd was at its heaviest and had been eagerly anticipating this moment. The first song of the night served as an excellent introduction for the group, whether you were familiar with them or not. Things took a sour turn when singer Crystal took stage for features on songs and for her solo intermission. On a track accompanied by Purpose that required a costume change, Crystal started out the song far off key, which led to MC/Singer Purpose being off key as well. Catch Lungs, who is an incredible lyricist was hard to hear most the set due to his manic movements and lack of controlling the mic (i.e. keeping it close enough to have a steady level). Flawless led the crowd to believe he was about to blow the set open when he pulled out an alto saxophone, but the small section he played left much to be desired. DJ Skip Ripkin had trouble when his needle broke mid set and he didn’t know how to handle it. This made for an extremely awkward moment of silence, about 5 minutes long before the Fox Sound Staff turned on house music as Skip ran off stage to get his comrades. All in all, stand outs (and surprises) of the set were MC Kontrast, who used his commanding voice and staccato flow to yield a great crowd response, as well as MC Fo Chief, who has one of those voices you can’t help pay attention to. Of course, there was also the closing moment when Masta Ace helped the crew out on their single “Save The Day” which was definitely the pinnacle of the set.

From there, the show continued on with Masta Ace. Where as he is definitely a legend and as much as I am a fan-this night was all about Colorado, which is where we should leave this story. All in all, the night was a success for all involved. Proving we have much more to offer out of the box state than Rodeos, Beer and championship sports. The Mile High City breaths Hip Hop.

Q&A With The Hip-Hop Blog Elite

If you read this month’s Colorado Music Buzz article Jump Into The 21st Century: Hip-Hop Blogs you know that there are some very thorough local Hip-Hop blogs.

I caught up with:

Miss Rachel, proprietor of PopularLemonade and half the team of 38thSquare (the other half is DJ Lazy Eyez)

Q Salazar-Moreno with the Colorado Hip Hop Blog

and Joe Thunder from Boxstate Music.

Here’s what they had to say:

What inspired you to start the blog?

~I started PopularLemonade.com as a project to show the world exactly what I was feeling at the moment - from women's sneakers to the new strain of independent hip hop to social and political matters which surround our community at large.  38thSquare.com was actually DJ Lazy Eyez's idea, and it filled the void that I was missing terribly from not supporting local hip hop in a regular manner after leaving Basementalism.  38thSquare features short, 5 - 6 minute video segments which Lazy & I produce.  Each episode focuses on one shining member of the community, and we hope to display these artists in a manner which reflects their talents beyond the typical interview setting.  Lazy has done a superb job with editing and directing the episodes.

~There was another blog out there claiming to rep for Colorado Hip Hop, but that was not the case.  They were only putting it down for the music side of Colorado Hip Hop (And not doing a good job at that).  They really didn't know that people were putting it down all over the city, they just knew about the people in there circle.  I offered to help them out being that I get down with a shit load of people, but they replied " If you don't like the way I run my blog start your own"...  So I did.

~I have been involved in the local hip-hop scene since the early 90’s. First as a fan, buying albums from guys like BMW, Kut-N-Kru, Tha Homeboys, Direct Assault, Deuce Mob, and others. Later on in the mid-90’s I started making music and hanging around guys like Kingdom, Dez, and other artists making noise locally. Once I graduated from college in 1999, got married, had kids, I basically didn’t keep up with the scene anymore. Then several years ago I just happened to go to a show that featured artists like Spoke-In-Wordz, Distrakt, ManeLine, P.A.A.S., The Pirate Signal, and some others and I was just BLOWN AWAY. At the time I was writing for Westword covering just national artists when they came to town and there was hardly any coverage of the local hip-hop scene. Not because they didn’t want to, but because no one really knew about it. I started the blog in 2006 to basically get the word out about how much talent we have here in Colorado while at the same time getting myself reacquainted with the local scene in order to cover it properly for Westword.

Do you think blogs are helpful for the Colorado hip hop community, and why?

~PopularLemonade isn't centered on Colorado hip hop because I feel like there are a lot of other cats in Denver and beyond doing a fantastic job with covering local events, talent, and so on.  I didn't want to step on anyones toes, but rather shed some light on what's good on a more national level.  Most of my web traffic here isn't from Colorado, but I'd like to change that.  Just because I don't write ABOUT Colorado doesn't mean that I'm not representing Colorado on a deeper level.
Our whole goal in starting 38thSquare is to promote artists, emcees, djs, designers, whatever else in an artistic way.  We're doing something for everyone in hopes that they will be able to use what we produce in their electronic press kits or any other promotional material that they need.  We feel like everyone has influenced us positively for so long and we wanted to share that with the rest of the world.  Essentially, we want to show everyone why we love Colorado as much as we do.

~It depends....  If you’re just running a blog and not putting anything into it it’s a waste of time. If you don't promote your blog and you just sit back and wait for people (artists) to send you stuff, I think you’re just feeding off the culture and you’re not helping Colorado Hip Hop at all.   I think Boxstatemusic.com is very helpful to the Hip Hop Community because it give artist and fans an inside look to the Colorado Hip Hop scene as a whole.  I'm bridging the Gap between Colorado Hip-Hop through unity.  One of my homies who writes was over the house the other day and was peeping the new DVD,  and I had some local music playing to some graffiti clips, and he was like I didn't  know music like this was coming out of the City (This is bridging the Gap Between Colo Hip Hop). This is what Boxstatemusic.com does.

~Yes, especially if it’s a non-bias outlet. Anyone can go to The Pirate Signal’s MySpace page to hear their music. But if you go to my blog, you not only get to hear their latest music, but also music from artists that you may have never heard like Mr. Midas, The Food Chain, Interstate Ike, or Fresh Breath Committee. At the same time, the artists that submit their material can get an idea of how an audience will respond to their music. Well, that’s what we hope for anyway. So they can see what works and what doesn’t.

How do you decide who to cover, or which material to post?

~For Popular Lemonade, I post what interests me - from music to videos to shoes to whatever else I'm impressed with.
When Lazy and I started 38thSquare, we talked for hours on end about the folks we wanted to feature and the direction we wanted to go with their episodes.  We have a whole laundry list of ideas and people we'd like to feature.  These are all people who have touched us with their creativity and drive - and also people who deserve some recognition for what they have done locally and beyond.

~As far as how do I decide to cover people on the site it’s on some, who ever want to get down type shit.   As far as the material I post it can't be your average shit because I'm not an average type of Guy.  If you know me or my track record, you know 99% of my stuff is EXCLUSIVE...  That is how I get down. Someone asked me the other day why I didn’t post their music/videos on my site and I told them you sent the exact same stuff to all the other blogs...    Look at all the other blogs that cover Co Hip Hop it’s all the same stuff.  Same music, same videos, same blah, blah, blah.  Now go to Boxstatemusic.com you see videos that were shot the night before, you see flick of pieces done that week, you hear music(freestyles) and interviews done just for Boxstatemusic.com (EXCLUSIVE SON)..  That’s how I get down.

~I basically post on the blog whatever is sent to me. That may change in the near future because my blog is starting to get some national recognition and becoming a representation of Colorado hip-hop as a whole. So if it’s going to rep an entire state’s hip-hop scene, you definitely want to put your best foot forward in all aspects. So my “critic” hat may have to come out soon.

How can artists/musicians get featured on your blog?

~To be featured on 38thSquare.com, send an email to Miss Rachel - rachel@popularlemonade.com

~Just hit me. Send your material to boxstatemusic@yahoo.com.   A little FYI like I said before: don't send me the exact same stuff you send to all the other blogs because it will get no play on Boxstatemusic.com...   So my suggestion is send me your material first label it EXCLUSIVE let me put it on blast for a week and then send it to the masses

~The contact link on the page. Send MP3s or youtube video links to cohiphop@gmail.com

Who contributes to your blog?

~PopularLemonade - just me and an occasional special popularlemonade.com mixtape from DJ Just The Tip.  Popular Booty mixtape, featuring music selected by myself & The General and mixed by Manizer is coming soon. 38thSquare - DJ Lazy Eyez & Miss Rachel.

~Everyone who gets down with me (Rappers, Producers, Writers, B Boys/B girls, DJ's, Fans & Friends).  As far as the material on the Blog; I take all the flicks, record all the video, and conduct all the interviews for boxstatemusic.com.   If there is anyone out there that wants to get down and help out just holla at me boxstatemusic@yahoo.com

~Just me

How many unique views do you get monthly?

~PopularLemonade: 1,833 (launched 4/2009)
38thSquare: 226 (launched 8/2009) (via Google Analytics, reporting’s from Sep 4, 2009 - Oct 4, 2009)

~1000-1500

~Between 3,000 to 4,000 UVs a month. Not bad for a localized, indie blog. But it depends on how consistent I am with updates.

What frustrates you about managing a blog?

~I think the thing that frustrates me the most about PopularLemonade is that my creative concept, since launch, has been to bring in a more national and international audience.  A lot of people don't seem to understand that there are SO many amazing, local Colorado music blogs out there.  I don't feel like it's my duty to compete with these other sites, as they do what they do well.  I just want to express myself there, and focus on the local scene in conjunction with DJ Lazy Eyez via 38thSquare.
The most frustrating thing about 38thSquare is that Lazy won't let me throw a launch party for every episode (jokes, but so true!).  Seriously though, he's been amazing to work with.  Working with colleagues and friends has been such a blessing
~People take your kindness for weakness.  People want you to show them love but don't return it.  Maybe it's because I'm in the Hip Hop Scene.  I guess people are always gonna hate, funny thing is they still tune in every week to see what cracking @ boxstatemusic.com.  Ha Ha

~Basically just finding the time to keep it updated. And if the music I’m getting is wack, it’s hard to be motivated to promote it on the blog.

Anything new and exciting to look out for in the near future?

~We're about to drop our third episode of 38thSquare in a week or two, which features Opt Won of Isolated Generation.  I can't say too much about the episode quite yet, but know that he's about to educate anyone who thinks their game is fresh.  If you haven't checked out Episodes 1 & 2, check the site.  DJ Low Key of the Radio Bums was gracious enough to be our very first featured artist.  Jolt from Guerilla Garden rocks our second episode, which is not to be missed either.

PopularLemonade is truly a work in progress.  If you check back every day, there will be something new to read or watch.

~New series of DVD's by your boy JoeThunder: Mile High Madness!!!! An EXCLUSIVE look into Colorado Hip Hop....  Also a ton of new projects w/ Blacc & Deca, J Money & Haven, Catch Lungs, Jimathiz & more are coming soon.

~Well, I recently re-launched the site in September with a new look and new format. I did it mostly for me because I got bored with it, but hopefully the visitors enjoy it to. I do have an idea of opening up an online store for artists to sell their music and merchandise but that would require a bit of time and investment that I don’t have at the moment.

Anything else you want Colorado to know about your blog?

~Check it out, leave us some comments.  Let us know if you'd like to be featured on 38thSquare and what your ideas are.  Lazy & I are always down to work with anyone.

~Don't Sleep I'm apart of a movement and it’s just getting bigger and bigger...

~It’s the first blog to cover Colorado Hip-Hop and when you google “Colorado Hip-Hop,” it’s the first link on the list. I plan to keep it that way.

Everyone should keep up to date with these blogs, not only are the interesting, intelligent and timely, but they are here to let everyone know what is going on in YOUR community!
